Hao x Jiji

Background背景

Born in 1992 in Shanghai, Hao studied at Shanghai Jiaotong University from 2011 to 2015 with a major in Art and Design, and then he went to ArtCenter College of Design and earned a degree in Media Design Practices in 2018. Hao has been practicing with various art forms, such as new media interactive installation, website, AR/VR, documentary film, performing art. During his research period in the U.S. in September 2015, He kept exploring the way of integrating art and digital technology that he started in Shanghai. Hao researches and humorously responds to the cultural landscape as a result of the incessant digitization based on the criticism against internet algorithm by Eastern living philosophy and on the synthetic virtual network.

Born in 1995, Jiji is an artist based in Shanghai, China. After she received a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, she lived and worked in New York before moving back to her home in Shanghai. She makes drawings of girls under celestial backgrounds and ceramics with human-morphed-animals. Jiji also makes her art across a broad scope of materials with a focus on electrical engineering. Failed machines, sino-futuristic fantasies, ancient mysteries, and tampered electronics are inspirations to her works. Born and raised in China, she experienced the rapid growth of China’s economy and technology development. She often goes to tech fairs and appreciates the variety of robots designed for coffee making, visitor reception, and cooking. The uprising economy took a hit by the COVID-19 outbreak is another surreal experience for Jiji: the failures and successes of the economy and political structure across continents. The concept of “vanity glamour” exists strongly throughout Jiji’s wearable works, and the feminine presence in technology is a theme ever so important throughout her practices.

Residency Experience

This dual artists residency was concluded with their NFT ART themed exhibition.

Hao created a series of NFT websites registered with a blockchain domain name during the residency at No Name Studio. These domain names end up with .crypto. These websites nuanced the ways we experience the internet. He challenged himself and took intervention on famous search engine companies such as Weibo HotSearch and Zhihu ( Chinese Quora). To him, these front pages are pre-made material. There’s one website that your keyboard doesn’t respond to your typing but instead, the artist predefined the message. There’s another website that hosts a data-craving cloud that demands micro user behaviors. Mouse movement is monitored on pixel levels. He hides the special effects when there’s too much data for this cloud. The third website directly altered from Weibo HotSearch.

Resin panels illuminated by LED beads, plastic sculptures in squiggly forms, paintings telling stories of fictional characters in symbolic gestures, those are the works produced by Jiji during her residency at No.name Studio. Propelled by intuitive gestures, Jiji starts her work on a fresh panel of the canvas, or a pile of untouched clay by making random marks, then she dives into the instinctive compositions that intrigue her the most. One of the most refreshing parts of Jiji’s time in the residency is that she gets to work with chemical materials that she otherwise would not have the resources to do so. Polymorph plastic is a non-toxic material that softens in hot water, and it is extremely friendly for Jiji to quickly build plastic forms that are structurally stable. Jiji also played with modeling clay, took an impression of the clay forms with silicone, and used the silicone mold to cast illustrative forms in colorful resin with pearl pigments.
