Jorge Luis Calderon

Background 背景

Born in Quito, Jorge expressed his strong interest in art at the age of 4 and started doing graffiti when he was 16. While having worked in the commercial engineering industry for a while, he decided to go to the Design Institute in 2006 to pursue his dream in the art world. This bold move allowed him to experiment with new artistic styles and techniques. Jorge's works demonstrate his exploration of the dynamics of urban lives as a street artist.  Vibrant colors, complex patterns, and ecstatic faces are integrated to form his unique artistic language. A viewer once said that what hiding behind his representations of various contemporary urbanscapes is the artist's open-ended question for us, "Do you want to be happy?" Jorge was honored by Quito as the "Contemporary representative artist of the city". As an artistic director in graphic design agencies, he has also been collaborating with famous brands such as Google and Disney.

Residency Experience 驻地经历

While Jorge has been focusing on representing urbanscapes in his previous series, he decided to paint on those iconic scenes in Zhujiajiao. Bridges, lanes, and roofs are telling stories to foreigners like Jorge about Chinese traditions. Continuing his use of bold colors, he infused a layer of modernity into this old town.

尽管Jorge先前的作品大多关注在城市景观上，这一次他决定以朱家角标志性的景色作为画作主题。桥，小巷和屋檐都在对和Jorge一样前来朱家角的外国人诉说着古老的中国传统。他一直以来对颜色大胆的运用也为这个古老的水镇增添了一抹现代的色彩。

 “I have been waking up with the sun over my face at 5 am every day. With full daylight to work on my projects, I feel that I have achieved the quality in two weeks that I could only do in a couple of months. There is a spirit of peace and happiness in the air. The town is not just a UNESCO heritage preserved water Town. The people, the artists, and creatives of the country are moving here and I understand why: they come for the peace that can't be acquired in big cities. I wish I can keep coming back. It has been an in-depth spiritual and artistic journey, and it's just 15 days."

“我每天早晨5点醒来，阳光散落在我的脸上。享受着日光工作，我感觉我用两周的时间创作出的作品达到了之前需要花费几个月才可能达到的质量。这里洋溢着一种平和和欢乐的气氛。这不仅仅是一个受到保护的世界文化遗产水镇。我明白人们，艺术家们，和创意人搬来这里的原因：他们是为了那一份在大城市无法获得的宁静。我希望我还能再回来。这是一次深度的心灵和艺术之旅，而仅仅才15天。”
