PACOWHY

Background 背景

PACOWHY is a Korean graffiti artist who works in both Seoul and Shanghai. Inspired by the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, his works often include familiar cartoon characters such as Tom and Jerry, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, and the Monkey King. Painting, graffiti, and collage are used in combination, giving a strong visual impact to audiences and conveying the artist’s interest in colors, materials, and his childish curiosity in searching for inspiration. In addition to making traditional art, PACOWHY also infuses his creativity into food as a food stylist, communicating his ideas through edible mediums and turning diners into part of his projects. He has been working at the intersection of various disciplines. PACOWHY’s past projects include integrating art, food, and music to bring an immersive multi-sensory experience to audiences. His multi-cultural artistic vision is also interpreted through his works for famous international consumer brands, inviting people to reconsider the increasingly expanded definition of art, and the complex yet intriguing relationship between art, food, and commerce.

Residency Experience

Works made during his residency were shown in the exhibition “Food & RMB”.

“Food & RMB”

The colonization of mass media pushes the excessive consumption, fetishization, and gentrification of food and deprives people’s ability to consciously understand and experience food. PACOWHY hopes to stylize food in a way that can encourage people to take time to observe, experience, and treat food as art, offering them an opportunity to create a new relationship with food and nourishing people’s body and mind.

While questioning social phenomena such as capitalism, materialization, fetishism, and nepotism through recreating iconic cartoon characters, PACOWHY also infuses his unique artistic language through texts. His canvases are loaded with words conveying new ideas that emerged during the creation process. Words such as Negroni and Italo often reappear in his works. As an integral part of his artistic expression, these words sometimes include titles of his works, but most of the time, they are not intended to convey their literal meanings. Against powerful brushstrokes, these mysterious words invite us to reflect on the aesthetic and power of words when represented as artistic forms. The artist’s intuition in color is communicated through the use of shades of orange, red, and yellow.

The artist’s new paintings during No Name residency project his endless curiosity, sincere passion for art, and his bold communication with the world.
